The Minority in Parliament has demanded the immediate suspension of Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD), following a widely circulated video that shows him handing US dollars to evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The footage, which has ignited intense public backlash, captures the high-profile government appointee and lawyer giving foreign currency to the former fetish priestess turned evangelist. The video has raised serious questions about ethical conduct and potential breaches of financial regulations.
Although Gyamfi has since apologized for the incident, the fallout continues. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has reportedly summoned him for questioning as the controversy deepens.
Addressing the media on Monday, May 12, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Walewale and a member of the Finance Committee, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, called for immediate presidential action.
“We are calling for the immediate suspension of Sammy Gyamfi as acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. His actions are in direct violation of the Code of Conduct, the Foreign Exchange Act, and the Currency Act,” Dr. Mahama said.
He emphasized that someone of Gyamfi’s legal background should have known better.
“Even the Chief Justice has noted that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Sammy Gyamfi is fully aware of the legal implications of his actions and must be held accountable,” he added.
In addition to the call for suspension, the Minority is pushing for a comprehensive probe into the origins of the currency featured in the video.
“We demand a thorough investigation into the source of the foreign currency displayed,” Dr. Mahama stated.
The incident comes at a time when the government is seeking to stabilize the cedi and clamp down on the use of foreign currencies in domestic transactions. The Minority argues that the conduct of public officials like Gyamfi undermines not only national policy but also public confidence in state institutions.
