Correspondence from Eastern Region

A male teacher at Modern Preparatory School has been granted bail by the Odumase Circuit Court in the Eastern Region, despite pleading guilty to charges of sextortion.

Details available to GhanaWeb indicate that the victim, Miss Dzigbordi, was a newly posted teacher at the aforementioned school.

According to information gathered, the accused, also a teacher at the same school, befriended the victim and, over time, expressed romantic interest in her. Although Miss Dzigbordi rejected his advances, the two remained friends.

During the course of their friendship, the accused visited the complainant at home. It was later discovered that he had secretly obtained and forwarded nude images of the victim.

He then used these images to demand sex from her, threatening to publish them if she refused.

Disturbed and threatened by her colleague’s actions, Miss Dzigbordi lodged a formal complaint at the Odumase Police Station on April 23, 2025.

Police arrested the accused, identified as Kumi, who admitted to the offence during interrogation.

On April 27, 2025, he appeared before the Odumase Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Abadu Appiatse, and pleaded guilty to the offence of sextortion, an act classified under extortion, which carries a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of 25 years in prison.

However, his sentencing was deferred, and he was remanded into prison custody. The case was initially adjourned to May 13, 2025, and subsequently to May 19, 2025, for final sentencing.

In a dramatic turn of events, the accused was granted bail on Monday, May 19, 2025, when he appeared before the same judge for sentencing.

Notably, the same court, presided over by Judge Kwesi Appiatse Abadoo, had in April 2025 sentenced an okada rider, Baba Zakaria, to 10 years’ imprisonment for sextortion and human trafficking.
