Teachers protest in Kassena-Nankana West, demand removal of District Education Director

Teachers in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region have staged a massive demonstration to demand the immediate removal of the District Education Director, George Woyongo, citing alleged misconduct, intimidation, and incompetence.

The teachers accused Mr. Woyongo of engaging in arbitrary transfers, unwarranted promotions, and disciplinary actions without due process.

Speaking during the protest on the streets of Paga, Apuri Albert, the District Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), alleged that the director has been mismanaging educational resources, intimidating staff, and neglecting teacher welfare.

“He intimidates every officer in the directorate, headteachers, and teachers in general. He refuses to allow schedule officers to perform their duties properly in the directorate,” Apuri stated.

He also accused the director of misusing official government vehicles for personal gain.

“He uses the district’s official pickup vehicle as a private car and allows the driver to distribute sachet water during working hours, while the driver continues to draw a salary from government coffers,” Apuri added.

According to the teachers, repeated efforts to engage the director and address their grievances have been ignored, forcing them to embark on this peaceful protest.

Apuri warned that if authorities fail to act, teachers in the district would boycott classrooms indefinitely.

“From here, we urge all teachers to stay out of school until the district director is removed. Once that is done, a communiqué will be issued,” he declared.

The protest was supported by members of GNAT, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), showing a united front among educators in the district.

Meanwhile, the teachers have also called on the Chairman of the Operations Recover All Loots (ORAL) team to investigate Mr. Woyongo for the alleged misuse of government property for personal businesses.
