Tema Traditional Council imposes curfew on Newtown ahead of purification

The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) will on Wednesday February 12, impose a curfew on the Tema Newtown township between 23:00 and 02:00 hours, to pave way for a purification rite to be performed.

This was announced in a letter signed by Mr Jefferey Lomo, the Registrar, TTC, which was made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), to inform stakeholders about the curfew.

It indicated that “during the period, traditional pacification rites will be performed within the township, and only traditional priests are to be seen outside.”

The GNA gathered that the purification was to cleanse the land from the numerous curses aggrieved residents pronounced in 2024 during the Kplejoo festival, which saw the death of two men, and to appease the spirits of the two victims to rest ahead of the commencement of this year’s festival.

On Friday, April 12, 2024, a tragedy hit Tema Newtown during the final Kplejoo festival procession by the youth, which saw two men reportedly being killed and three others suffering various degrees of injuries.

The incident occurred when a confrontation ensued between the processing youth and some personnel of the Ghana Navy.

Following the incident, the Council, led by Nyaado Nii Dade Abo Hamler, the second Aboitse We Wolomo (traditional priest), performed some rites to invoke the spirits of their gods and ancestors to intervene in the killings.
