That’s a bit too rushed – Political scientist criticises NPP NEC’s Jan 31 date for flagbearer election

A political scientist and a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has described the party’s decision to hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, 31st January 2026, as a political suicide.

His comments follow a decision taken at a crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections before other internal elections.

Speaking to 3FM Sunrise, with Johnnie Hughes on June 20, Dr. Amoako Baah cautioned that adopting a flagbearer-first approach could erode internal democracy and weaken the foundational structures of the party.

“That’s a bit too rushed; they have done some forensic investigation to find out what went wrong. You have not implemented anything the report indicated, and now you are preparing to organise elections. What is that? That makes progress stall. It makes no sense.” He bemoaned.

For Dr Jonathan Asante Okyere, who is a Political analyst, he believes the suggested arrangement will be fair for all competitors.

“If they are going to use the old register, then that means that the very delegates that elected the Presidential candidate for 2024 are the very delegates that are going to elect the party’s flagbearer for 2028. But that should tell you that structurally, somebody is one step ahead of the rest of them. I don’t see a potential significant shift from what transpired before the 2024 elections.” He said

Meanwhile, Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has also entreated the current executive to resign for leading the party into an abysmal performance in the 2024 general elections.

“Whatever happened requires house cleaning, some people must be removed, some of the old executives must be removed and bring new people, adjust your constitution and all the things that have gone wrong. They haven’t done any of it, so how are they going to run for elections again?” He asked.
