Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe, has expressed concerns about the current state of the opposition party.
The NPP, built on a centre-right ideology, was founded to unite citizens in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and the protection of human rights through true property-owning democracy.
However, Dr. Tamakloe lamented that the party has lost its tradition and is now being led by individuals craving wealth at the expense of citizens.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, April 27, he suggested that the party must reposition itself to selflessness and service under the right leadership.
“The NPP tradition is no more. What we have now is a party where individuals crave wealth and property. We need to reclaim the soul of the party. And that can only happen with the right leadership,” he said.
The party, which entered the 2024 elections aiming to break the 8-year cycle of governance, suffered a heavy defeat to the NDC with a margin of about 1.7 million votes.
According to Dr. Tamakloe, the defeat was due to the current state of the party, which he believes has become detached from the masses.
“It’s one of the reasons we were defeated so severely. The party has detached itself from the masses. If we claim our followers didn’t vote, what caused that? We must be honest with ourselves.
“If we allow things to continue as they are, the party will be totally destroyed,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the NPP, led by its national executives and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is currently on a post-election thank-you tour across the country.
