Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing post-election thank-you tour, citing concerns over safety and hostility towards him and his supporters.
According to the outspoken politician, the recent stabbing of one of his supporters by a party vigilante and a tense encounter with Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, are clear indications that he is not wanted on the tour.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 30, he echoed growing claims that the ongoing tour is an indirect campaign by the former Vice President.
“It is a clear indication. What happened in Kumasi tells me that, look, you are not needed. You are not wanted. So we are pulling out. Let them do their own thing,” he said.
“Myself and my team want to pull out. Lives are threatened and I don’t think I can protect my team enough, so I will pull out so Dr. Bawumia can continue with his campaign,” he added.
Following this announcement, Mr. Agyapong reaffirmed his intention to contest the NPP’s next flagbearer race, despite his unsuccessful bid in 2023.
“I want everybody to know—every party member—that I’m going to contest, so they should be ready. And respectfully, nobody can tell me to back off. I will not back off, because we started from the 1990s till now.
“At the appropriate time, I assure them that we are also going to campaign,” he said.
