Boakye Agyarko is a flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party
Flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, has slammed the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) over its decision to change the internal elections approach to a top-down system.
Addressing the development during an interview on Sompa FM on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Agyarko did not mince words in his strong criticism, expressing his disapproval of the NEC’s decision, which he described as ‘total nonsense.’
He questioned the rationale behind the change in approach, which previously involved electing party executives before selecting a flagbearer, but has now been changed to prioritise the election of a flagbearer before executives.
He suggested that the decision was made to serve certain selfish interests within the party.
“What has caused for them to change the bottom-top approach to top-bottom approach? Who builds a house starting from the roof before constructing the foundation. It’s either some people don’t understand the politics or are just being selfish and greedy. Why will you elect a flagbearer before national and regional executives? It is total nonsense!” Agyarko stated.
The politician, who previously served as Minister of Energy under the Akufo-Addo-led government, drew comparisons between the potential impact of electing a flagbearer first and the effect of electing party executives before selecting a flagbearer.
He argued that electing party executives from the polling stations would reduce the party’s workload and ease its burden during grassroots campaigning.
He added that the work rate achieved by the executives would far surpass that of the flagbearer in campaign efforts.
“If you understand campaigns very well, you will not elect a flagbearer at this time. There are 88,917 human settlements in Ghana and so, if you elect a flagbearer and expect them to campaign in all these communities, it will take them 10 years to achieve that, but if you have 210,000 executives from polling stations, they can successfully campaign in these communities within a week if two executives are assigned to each community,” he continued.
To reinforce his point, Agyarko asserted that since an individual cannot single-handedly secure an election victory for a party, this is why executives from the polling station level, through to the regional and national, are prioritised first.
“First and foremost, we sell the party to the people before the flagbearer even comes in. There is no way one person can win an election for any political party, that is why we begin from the polling stations,” he added.
His comments come in response to the party’s announcement that it will elect its flagbearer in January 2026.
NPP presidential aspirant hopeful Boakye Agyarko has strongly criticized the National Executive Committee’s decision to conduct the presidential primaries before the national executive elections, describing it as nonsense and motivated by greed.
