The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately transfer all regional, divisional, and district police commanders serving in galamsey-affected areas.

The directive, he explained, aims to replace long-serving officers who have failed to curb illegal mining, which poses a significant threat to the nation’s environment.

Mr. Muntaka warned that newly appointed commanders would also be transferred if they fail to tackle the menace.

“I have ordered the transfer of all regional, divisional, and district police commanders serving in galamsey areas. They will be replaced with new ones. If the new officers also fail to stop the activities, they will be transferred as well,” he stated.

The Minister further revealed that some security personnel, instead of combating illegal mining, were now colluding with miners.

“We have received reports that some police commanders are rather conniving with galamseyers instead of fighting the menace,” he said.

Meanwhile, as part of plans to end the long-held canker, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has called for fast-track courts to prosecute offenders on time to serve as deterrent to others.
