Two cousins in a fatal road accident
Two cousins tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident on the accident-prone Odumase-Krobo to Oterkporlu road in the Eastern Region on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
The victims, Wisdom Gbli Horla, 24, a final-year Computer Science student at the University of Ghana, and Benedict Gbli, a diploma holder, were both active players for the Blockbusters Volleyball Team based in Asesewa, Eastern Region.
Their lives were cut short when they were crushed to death by a limestone-hauling tipper truck with registration number GS 521-23 on a sharp curve in the mountainous enclave.
According to GhanaWeb’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Oberteye, the cousins were en route from Asesewa to Asitey to participate in a volleyball match. Although a team bus was provided for the journey, the duo opted to travel by motorcycle instead.
Information gathered indicates that, upon reaching a section of the road at Ayemersu, a fellow rider ahead of them overtook a pickup truck. The two cousins, who were riding closely behind, also attempted to overtake the pickup.
Unfortunately, during the maneuver, they veered into the lane of an oncoming tipper truck descending from the direction of the Odugblase limestone mines.
The truck driver was unable to avoid a collision. The impact was devastating, resulting in the instant death and dismemberment of the two young men.
Officers from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Odumase Police Command responded promptly to the scene. The remains of the victims were conveyed to the St. Martin de Porres Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation, where doctors confirmed them dead on arrival.
In an interview, the father of Wisdom Gbli Horla, who is the First Vice Chairman of the NPP in the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency, recounted that his son had informed him of the trip to Odumase to participate in a volleyball match.
He was devastated to receive the heartbreaking news shortly afterward.
Describing his son as a “quiet, nice, and gentle young man” who abstained from smoking and drinking, he said the tragedy was a huge loss to the family.
The Odumase Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
