
Two young men have been sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour after pleading guilty to stealing a firearm and ammunition belonging to an immigration officer in Walewale.
The convicts, Mustapha Basit, 18, and Baba Rashid, 22, were charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing. They were convicted by Justice Francis Asobayeri at the Walewale Circuit Court on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
The theft took place on Saturday, May 17, around 12:00 p.m., when the two broke into the immigration officer’s room in his absence. They stole a Smith & Wesson pistol containing ten rounds of ammunition and two CZ rifle magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds.
Following swift investigations, the suspects were apprehended and brought before the court, where they admitted to the charges. Authorities have confirmed that arrangements are being finalized to transfer them to a correctional facility to begin serving their sentences.
Their sentencing is being hailed as a warning to others and a step toward maintaining law and order in the region.
