UCC SRC’s sanitary pad initiative champions dignity and inclusion

The 62nd Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has rolled out a major menstrual health intervention—donating sanitary pads to hundreds of female students across campus.

The initiative was a call to action against period poverty and a bold step toward fostering a learning environment where no student is held back by basic hygiene needs.

Spearheaded by the SRC’s Women’s Commissioner, Ms. Freda Kumi, the project received widespread praise and gratitude from beneficiaries. For many, it served as both relief and validation.

“Menstruation should never be a barrier to education. This initiative is about ensuring that our women feel supported, safe, and dignified,” Ms. Kumi remarked.

SRC President Abraham Norman Nortey reinforced this commitment, describing the project as a critical part of the Council’s student welfare agenda.

“We’re not just leading—we’re listening. And we’re acting. Supporting female students with sanitary pads is one of many ways we’re making student welfare tangible and inclusive,” he said.

For students like Ama, a level 200 Social Sciences student, the gesture struck a deep chord.

“This may seem small to some, but for us, it lifts a burden. It shows that our leaders understand what we go through and are willing to help.”

Held with music, solidarity messages, and symbolic presentations, the donation ceremony also amplified broader conversations on menstrual equity at a time when national discourse around menstrual health and access continues to grow.

With this bold move, the UCC SRC has positioned itself not only as a student leadership body but as a changemaker, challenging the silence around menstruation, prioritizing dignity, and redefining what it means to lead with empathy.
