The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has reiterated the commitment of her administration to tackle the university’s long-standing accommodation challenges, as she officially inaugurated the newly constructed Diamond Jubilee Hall.

The 1,200-bed facility designed to offer affordable and comfortable housing to students, is part of the university’s broader efforts to expand accommodation capacity.

The project was undertaken under the supervision of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) in collaboration with a private consultancy team led by Dr. George Menz.

Speaking at the commissioning, Prof. Amfo highlighted the importance of the project in alleviating the accommodation deficit and improving the student experience.

“Today marks a monumental milestone in the history of the University of Ghana as we unveil the Diamond Jubilee Hall. This outstanding project reflects our collective commitment to providing innovative, sustainable, and affordable solutions to the urgent need for student accommodation,” she stated.

She assured students that measures were in place to ensure a smooth allocation process, emphasizing the university’s resolve to avoid unnecessary delays.

“In the coming days, you will receive detailed information on how to secure a bed. We could have done this earlier, but I wanted to avoid a situation where the hall was commissioned but remained unused for months. University Management has approved that UGEL and PDMSD will jointly manage the Diamond Jubilee Hall,” she added.

The Acting Director of PDMSD, Peter Abalansah, commended the university’s cost-cutting strategies, which significantly reduced the project’s budget from an initial estimate of GHC 120 million to GHC 55 million.

The facility comprises 448 fully furnished rooms, including 264 double-occupancy rooms and 184 four-person rooms, each equipped with study desks, comfortable bedding, ceiling fans, and shared washrooms. It also features kitchens, reading rooms, TV lounges, a maintenance unit, a washing bay, JCR tutorial and executive offices, as well as eateries and shops to enhance student life on campus.
