University of Ghana halts campus events as COVID-19 resurges

The University of Ghana has moved swiftly to suspend all social gatherings on campus following a resurgence of COVID-19 cases among its community.

The decision comes after the university confirmed on Monday, June 23, that several new cases—both suspected and confirmed, had been detected, prompting a renewed call for caution.

In a statement released by the University Health Directorate on Thursday, June 26, authorities revealed that the situation has triggered a reactivation of existing health protocols and a heightened state of alert across campus.

“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread,” the statement noted.

Acting on this development, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has directed all student-led bodies, including the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and other departmental and faculty associations, to immediately suspend all planned events, celebrations, and gatherings.

According to a statement signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, the directive is a necessary preventive step to ensure the safety of the university’s population.

“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the University community,” the notice emphasised.

The university has called on all students and organisations to comply fully with the suspension and cooperate with health authorities to help contain the spread of the virus.
