University of Ghana refutes reports of GH₵11 Million graduation fee collection without medallions

The University of Ghana has dismissed recent reports alleging that it collected over GH₵11 million in graduation fees without distributing medallions and scroll holders to graduates.

The claims, initially published by JoyNews and shared by Joy 99.7 FM, have been described as misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement released by the Public Affairs Directorate on February 17, 2025, the university clarified that the GH₵500 graduation fee paid by each of the 15,776 expected graduates covers multiple essential items and services.

These include gown rental, a congregation publication, a university-branded souvenir, and administrative overheads. The total expected revenue from the fees, if fully paid, amounts to GH₵7,888,000—not the GH₵11 million figure that was widely reported.

The university acknowledged that medallions and scroll holders were not provided during the graduation ceremonies due to procurement delays. However, an official notice dated February 10, 2025, had already informed graduates about these delays, with an assurance that the items would be distributed at the appropriate time.

The statement criticized JoyNews for publishing what it called a “sensational” story without verifying the facts. It urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and rely on official university communications for accurate information.
