University Senior Staff declare indefinite nationwide strike over unfulfilled agreement

The Senior Staff Association of Ghana, in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association, has declared an indefinite strike effective today, Wednesday, May 21.

The unions accuse both the current and previous governments of failing to honour a six-month-old agreement meant to improve their conditions of service.

Until their demands are met, the leadership has instructed members to stay home.

George Ansong, National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, said the strike action was a last resort following failed dialogue.

“The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” Mr Ansong stated.

He described the decision as difficult but necessary, highlighting that “countless engagements and goodwill efforts extended to the government” had been met with “persistent inaction, neglect, and blatant failure” to honour the terms of a duly signed agreement from six months ago.

According to Mr Ansong, despite numerous rounds of dialogue, repeated reminders, and the granting of extended timelines, the government has failed to deliver on its promises, thereby eroding trust and undermining cooperation between the parties.

“The government has continuously reneged on its commitment, thereby undermining the trust and cooperation that should exist between both parties,” he added.
