Hajia Mariam Mohammed is the President and Chairperson of Voice of the Nation
Correspondence from Ashanti Region
In a bold act of civic duty, Hajia Mariam Mohammed, the President and Chairperson of Voice of the Nation, as well as the General Deputy Secretary of ADAM-GH (African Development and Monitoring Group), has foiled an attempted attack on the Chief of Quarshikrom, Nana Quarshi Rockson, by individuals alleged to be military officers. The incident is believed to be linked to a protracted land dispute that has left the farming community in a state of fear.
According to eyewitness accounts, Hajia Mariam was in a meeting with the chief when the suspected military officers stormed his residence, forcefully banging on the windows in what appeared to be an attempt to attack him. Her swift intervention—questioning their identity and mission—compelled the alleged intruders to withdraw without confrontation.
In a press briefing, Nana Rockson appealed to the government and national security agencies to urgently intervene in what he described as coordinated attacks against him and more than 600 local farmers in his community by individuals posing as soldiers.
“These attacks are deliberate and targeted. I’ve been beaten three times, and our people live in fear daily,” the chief lamented.
He claimed the group is led by one Seth Mante, who has allegedly assaulted him on at least three occasions. The chief also expressed frustration over the inaction of local police, who he said have failed to respond effectively despite multiple reports.
At the core of the issue is a bitter land dispute. The Quarshikrom community, which borders the alleged attackers, is resisting what the chief describes as forceful encroachment. He accused the group of illegally selling lands, destroying cocoa farms, and replacing them with rubber plantations, in an effort to seize ownership of lands that belong to Quarshikrom.
Nana Rockson commended Hajia Mariam Mohammed for her bravery during one of the most recent attacks. He emphasized that, without swift government intervention, the situation could escalate into violence, as community members have vowed to defend their lands against unlawful takeover.
“We are not against development. We’re ready to lease our lands to genuine investors and farmers, but we will not sit back and watch people steal what is rightfully ours,” he stated.
He called on the government, security services, and traditional authorities to act swiftly to restore peace, protect the livelihoods of farmers, and uphold justice.
“Our people have vowed to defend our ancestral lands. We don’t want bloodshed, but if provoked, we will not fold our arms,” the chief warned.
The community now awaits urgent action from authorities to prevent further escalation and ensure lasting peace in Quarshikrom.
