Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP
Armed security officials, purported to be officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed the home of New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Viral videos of the incident showed armed men at the entrance of the Ashanti Region NPP chairman’s home in Kumasi.
One of the videos showed security officials, some in police uniforms and others in plain clothes, alighting from white pick-up trucks.
Another video showed the supposed security officials knocking and banging at the main entrance gate of Wontumi’s home.
A report by Citi FM on Friday indicated that the security team was demanding access to the premises, which was locked on their arrival.
It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.
Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.
