The husband of suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo, Francis Kofi Torkornoo, was spotted at the precincts of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, where the court heard two applications to stop the ongoing hearing on three petitions for the removal of his wife.

GHOne TV captured Francis Kofi Torkornoo, who is the immediate past Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB), leaving the court, which was shared on X on Wednesday.

The former NACOB boss could be seen leaving the court with a group after the court ruled on the second petition.

It is not clear whether he was with the lawyers, but all of them could be seen walking towards the car park area of the court.

The media house captioned the video, “CJ Torkornoo’s husband and legal team leaving Supreme Court following dismissal of an application for interlocutory injunction aimed at halting hearing of three petitions against the Chief Justice.”

About the two petitions:

The Supreme Court has dismissed the first application filed by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES), which sought to reverse President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice and to halt the work of the removal committee.

The decision was reached by a 4-1 majority of a five-member panel chaired by Acting Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie. The majority votes came from Justice Tanko Amadu, Justice Yonny Kulendi, and Justice Henry Kwofie, alongside the Chair. However, Justice Yaw Asare Darko dissented, resulting in a split 4-1 decision.

The Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems, a civil society organisation, sought to contest the constitutionality of Torkornoo’s removal process.

This followed President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo on April 22, 2025, after a prima facie case was established against her based on petitions from private citizen Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civic advocacy group Shining Stars of Ghana.

Among the reliefs they sought was a declaration that the President’s response to the petitions was unconstitutional, citing violations of Articles 17(1)-(3), 23, 296, and 146(1)-(4) and (6) of the 1992 Constitution.

The Supreme Court, led by Acting Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, also dismissed the second application seeking an interlocutory injunction against the five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang.

The committee is led by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang and includes Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah.

In a 4-1 split decision, Ag. Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, Justice Tanko Amadu, Justice Yonny Kulendi, and Justice Henry Kwofie voted in favour of dismissing the injunction, while Justice Yaw Asare Darko dissented.

The reasons for the verdict, however, will be made available on Thursday, 29 May, 2025.

The suit, filed at the apex court on Tuesday, 20 May, 2025, by Theodore Kofi Atta-Quartey, a concerned Ghanaian citizen, was seeking a restraining order to halt the proceedings of the five-member committee and to suspend the enforcement of the suspension warrant issued against the suspended Chief Justice.
