Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has disclosed that senior figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are going to President John Dramani Mahama to express regret over the actions of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, June 10, Dr. Afriyie indicated that their Ashanti Regional Chairman crossed the line and the only way was to go and ask for forgiveness from President Mahama.
He stated that Wontumi himself has agreed to apologise for his remarks.
“For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama. Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line,” he said.
Dr. Afriyie cited Wontumi’s comments in several viral videos ahead of the 2024 elections were not only inflammatory but also deeply personal, admitting that such behavior went too far.
He further noted that while political rivalry is part of Ghana’s democratic landscape, it must not descend into personal attacks and fabrications. According to him, humility is required from all sides, especially when public figures cross ethical boundaries.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO but later released on bail after fulfilling his conditions. He was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with two sureties justified, and his legal team confirmed the terms were met by Friday, May 30.
