A group of former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) under the past New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, has dismissed claims that over 250 of them have declared support for Kennedy Agyapong’s bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The rebuttal follows reports that emerged after a meeting between Mr. Agyapong and some former MMDCEs last week, where his camp suggested he had secured their endorsement as the party’s next flagbearer.
But speaking to the media on Monday, June 23, the former MCE for Adenta in the Greater Accra Region, Ebenezer Doku, said no such endorsement was made during that meeting.
Mr. Doku stressed that the group rather backs former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“I was at the meeting with Kennedy Agyapong myself. The claim that over 250 former MMDCEs came to endorse him is false. We didn’t deliver any statement there. Today, we are reading a statement on behalf of all of us,” he said.
“There was no statement at Kennedy Agyapong’s meeting. We spoke, we wined, we dined and we left. Today, we are throwing our support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with an official statement,” Mr. Doku added.
The NPP, following its National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, June 17, has scheduled January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the next general election.
So far, some of the names being speculated as likely contenders include former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Dr. Bawumia.
