The Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija-Gbawe Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has raised concerns over the persistent flooding issues affecting his constituency and the Greater Accra Region at large.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, he highlighted the devastating impact of flooding on his constituents and blamed the recurring problem on poor drainage systems.

Shaib lamented that flooding has become an annual crisis in the Greater Accra Region, stressing that current preventive measures are inadequate to address the underlying causes.

He warned that the persistent flooding not only endangers public safety but also threatens the economic stability of the region.

The MP, therefore, urged his fellow lawmakers to take immediate and comprehensive action to tackle the issue and mitigate its effects.

Adding her voice to the call, Comfort Doyoo Ghansah, MP for the Ada Constituency also in the region, agreed with Shaib’s concerns, expressing frustration over the lack of sustained efforts to prevent flooding.

She emphasized that solutions could have been implemented long ago if the necessary attention had been given.

Ghansah drew a parallel with the Netherlands, where proactive and well-planned measures have turned water bodies from flooding risks into recreational and tourist attractions. She noted that Ghana could learn from such international best practices to manage flooding more effectively.

Both MPs called for urgent and coordinated efforts to address the flooding crisis, highlighting the need for improved drainage infrastructure and proactive urban planning.

They expressed hope that Parliament would prioritize finding sustainable solutions to protect communities from the recurring menace.
