We’ll recruit 50,000 teachers, 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025 – Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching personnel in 2025 as part of a nationwide effort to strengthen Ghana’s education system.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister confirmed that funding for the large-scale recruitment exercise has already been secured in the 2025 national budget.

His remarks came in response to concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for a probe into allegations that some teachers were mistreated during a recent protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.

Haruna Iddrisu dismissed the allegations of manhandling, assuring the House that the government is actively addressing the concerns of affected teaching personnel, particularly those facing posting delays.

“This morning, I met with Bafour Eric, and I will soon share the details with the public. We discussed the matter, and he indicated to me that clearance was received in May. They were expected to start work in August but began in September.

“Naturally, by December 31, the clearance issued by the Finance Ministry had expired, and they can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which is what I am currently awaiting. Let them be assured.

“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” he said.

The mass recruitment is expected to improve teaching and administrative capacity in schools across the country, especially in underserved areas. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving existing posting challenges while creating new opportunities for graduates and education professionals.
