Walewale is hardest hit when it comes to poor sanitation concerns like what’s pictured here
Correspondence from North East Region
The West Mamprusi Municipality in the North East Region has been battling a severe sanitation crisis, with Walewale being the hardest hit.
For years, residents have expressed frustration over poor waste management, blaming authorities for failing to provide a clean environment that would attract investors.
A major concern is the unauthorised dumping site in Walewale, where school children often rummage through trash, posing serious health risks.
The main dumpsite, located on the National Health Insurance Office-Tampulungu road, has encroached on a major road and even the main tarred road leading to the Walewale Government Hospital.
Despite being informed of the situation, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaah, has not taken action to relocate the dumpsite.
The hospital authorities have also expressed concerns, as the dumpsite is located on hospital land, just a few meters away from the hospital and health insurance office.
The resulting stench, particularly during rainfall, is deteriorating the health conditions of patients.
The hospital management has voiced worries about the dumpsite, but the assembly has shown little concern.
Abdul Rahman Bilal Yussif, the Assembly Member for the Bokuduri Electoral Area, revealed to GhanaWeb that he has appealed to the assembly multiple times, but his pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
“My continue effort is that I have been doing everything that I can to make sure that they get a container where the residents can be pouring the refuse but to no avail. We are doing our best, yet our best has not been realised.
“It has always been my concern, and I have been doing everything that I can within my power to clear this refuse here and get a container where the residents could be pouring the refuse into. This is a very serious issue,” Bilal lamented.
He also added that; “Look at this. It is very close to the municipal hospital. The hospital is where they treat diseases, but when sick people are coming here, then it is unfortunate.”
He said it is a serious concern to him and that he doesn’t sleep during the night.
“This has been my concern. I don’t sleep. It gives me sleepless night. So it is a big headache to me, and I am appealing for the assembly to clear it and bring containers,” he added.
The situation highlights the need for urgent intervention from local authorities to address the sanitation crisis and ensure a clean and healthy environment for residents.
