The Western Regional Police Command has intensified its fight against illegal mining by dismantling over 120 changfang machines and arresting 13 individuals at Wassa Gyapa in the Western Region.

The crackdown, conducted on Monday, 19th May 2025, is part of ongoing efforts to curb galamsey activities in the area.

Those arrested include Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.

Besides destroying the changfang machines, the police also seized six motorbikes from the mining site.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Tarkwa Circuit Court today, Tuesday, 20th May 2025, to face charges related to illegal mining.

Authorities stress that this operation is part of a broader initiative to protect the region’s environment and water bodies from the damaging effects of illegal mining.
