Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, has announced plans to summon the Ministers of Defence and Interior to Parliament following President John Dramani Mahama’s recent leadership reshuffle within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Fordjour expressed strong reservations about the changes, calling them “disruptive and risky” and warning of their potential impact on the military’s independence.
“We are going to haul the two ministers—Defence and Interior—before us and appraise the House on how this very disruptive and risky transition is being managed. It shouldn’t be taken for granted,” he stated during an appearance on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday.
He further criticized President Mahama’s decision, comparing it to the actions of military juntas and coups.
“What President Mahama has done is very similar to military juntas and military coup d’états. It’s as if President Mahama didn’t win with 6.3 million votes. It is as if he won by coup d’état,” he remarked.
Fordjour stressed the need to protect the independence of the GAF and cautioned against decisions that could weaken the institution’s autonomy.
“Ghanaians gave you votes; they didn’t give you guns. In your quest to set your governance right, you don’t have to take disruptive decisions that will weaken the independence of the GAF,” he added.
