Why NPP risks becoming irrelevant by 2028 — CDD fellow warns

Dr. Kwame Asiedu Sarpong, a fellow at CDD-Ghana, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rethink its strategy or risk becoming politically irrelevant by 2028.

Reacting to findings from the latest Global Info Analytics National Tracking Poll, Dr. Sarpong said the opposition is fast losing its grip on voters despite Ghana’s lingering economic challenges.

According to him, the poll shows that 62 percent of voters now believe Ghana is on the right path, a significant jump from 32 percent recorded in October 2024.

He added that President Mahama currently enjoys a strong 66 percent approval rating, cutting across party lines except in the Ashanti Region, which remains the only major area where many still believe Ghana is on the wrong track.

Dr. Sarpong noted that the NPP’s support is declining rapidly, and its leadership ratings are falling despite inflation and unemployment remaining the top voter concerns.

“The NPP’s decline is shocking. Once seen as the natural alternative, the opposition is bleeding support,” he said.

He warned the NPP not to repeat the mistake of ignoring poll results as they did in the past, stressing, “They have a choice to ignore this poll as they did before the last general elections and see their fortunes dwindle further or learn from the results of ridiculing previous polls and look at this data for answers.”

Dr. Sarpong also pointed out that public anger over galamsey (illegal mining) remains a major vulnerability for the current government, urging swift action to prevent future backlash.
