Xoese Ghana, a non-governmental organization assisting women with fertility issues, has recorded the birth of its first baby by one of the women who is a beneficiary of the Xoese Fertility and Maternal Support Project (Xoese FMS).
The new baby, a boy, was delivered at a health facility in Tema on Friday, February 21, 2025, after his mother received assistance with fertility treatment starting in 2024, making it the first-ever achievement of Xoese Ghana, the NGO championing a campaign to end infertility stigma in Ghana.
Health officers who attended to the new mother and baby said they were healthy and strong throughout their antenatal appointments to the day of delivery. Mother and child were thus discharged the very next day.
The fertility journey
The Executive Director of Xoese Ghana, Ms. Emelia Naa Ayeley Aryee, disclosed that the 27-year-old beneficiary of the Xoese FMS first contacted the NGO in April 2024, registering her frustration about her inability to get pregnant after trying everything within her power for three years without success.
Before coming to Xoese Ghana, the new mother had previously visited the hospitals and had taken some medications prescribed by the doctors but was not achieving the desired results; however, at Xoese, it took a pelvic scan to detect what the problem was.
“With Madam Millicent, her issues came to bear with the first pelvic scan. She started treatment the same day, and it was to last for two weeks. She was also given a couple of dos and don’ts by our in-house doctor, Doctor Samuel Gyedu Owusu,” Ms. Aryee disclosed.
She revealed further that after the treatment, Madam Millicent took another scan to ascertain if the infection had been cured, and it turned out it was.
“Then, sometime in June, she reported to the NGO with news that she was three weeks pregnant. That was big good news for us because our goal is to break infertility stigma by helping women overcome infertility and getting pregnant,” Ms. Aryee added.
From the day of the announcement of the pregnancy, Millicent was given directions on choosing a health facility close by to start attending her antenatal visits. She also called on the NGO whenever she needed medical guideline and support on the pregnancy journey, Ms. Aryee said.
Xoese FMS Project
The Xoese FMS project was officially started in February 2024, to offer direct medical support to women and couples needing assistance to conceive, when it was discovered at Xoese Ghana’s first-ever event, the PCOS Seminar in September 2023, that a lot of couples needed assistance to have their baby.
The project was heralded by the signing of MOUs with fertility facilities, including Clarity Specialist Scan and Metropolis Healthcare, to offer their services to Xoese Ghana women and couples at discounted fees.
The services offered include semen analyses, hormonal tests, pelvic scans, transvaginal scans, urine re, and all other tests required in evaluating infertility in both men and women.
Partnership deals have also been secured with fertility centers, including Tema Women’s Hospital, Accra Fertility Center, and Lister Hospitals, where our cases are escalated to when necessary.
The Board Chairman of Xoese Ghana, Dr. Samuel Gyedu Owusu, handles all the cases brought to the NGO until there’s the need to escalate to any of our partner fertility centers. So far, over 30 women have benefitted from the Xoese FMS Project
Under the Xoese FMS Project, with the help of Kinapharma Pharmaceutical Limited, and Dannex Ayrton Starwain (DAS) Pharmaceutical Limited, donations of iron supplements and cough syrups have also been made to Tema Manhean Polyclinic, St. Anthony’s Hospital, Dzodze, Volta Region, and to staff of Mamprobi Polyclinic to help treat anemia in pregnant women.
The Xoese FMS will be extended to other regions of Ghana soon, Ms. Aryee avered.
Meanwhile, Xoese Ghana was in the news recently for its Fertility Conference and PCOS Management Webinar held to educate women and couples on boosting their fertility and also provide them direct access to fertility experts.
