Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding their opposition to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Justice Atuguba described the party’s stance and the recent demonstration demanding her reinstatement as “pure hypocrisy” and indicative of a troubling exclusion of public interest in Ghana’s political discourse.
His comments, made during an interview on Joy News, directly addressed the NPP’s claims that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice was unconstitutional and a threat to judicial independence.
But Justice Atuguba questioned the NPP’s moral authority on the issue, asking, “How were they when they were in office? How did they perform? Acting transparently in the interest of the people, did they do that? What!”
“These are the kinds of things I just hate. That is pure hypocrisy. The exclusion of public interest in our political space is very troubling.”

The retired Justice further recalled the period before the elections when the Supreme Court faced public criticism, particularly on social media, where it was labeled “unanimous FC.”
He questioned the NPP’s inaction during their time in power, stating, “Before the elections, it was a common parlance on social media where the Supreme Court was being described as ‘unanimous FC’, was it President Mahama who was doing that? They were in office; what steps did they take?”
